Why it's a 3 step process
I was asked earlier today why we do a 3 step process when we do an inventory at AAble Home Services. We want to make sure that your inventory is thorough and well documented so that, in the case of a claim, you are confident and secure in knowing that what you had will be available for replacement.
What are the 3 steps?
1. We do a video inventory of the exterior and interior to set context and to be sure everything is included. We take a 360 degree pan shot of the upper half and then a second pan of the lower half of every room.
2. We return to each room and take digital photos of each item of importance.
3. Finally, we return to each room once more and write pertinent details about items and scan any receipts or documents you feel should be part of the inventory.
Why not just do all the steps in each room together?
We have found that taking the above approach gives our clients the chance to identify items that they hadn't considered before. For example, during an inventory a few weeks back, I did the video capture and took the photos, then the client remembered some keepsakes in a drawer of the entertainment center. Now, we didn't have them on video nor pictures, but after documenting the other items, I took pictures of the collectible Christmas ornaments and documented them. If I had simply finished the 3 steps on the first go, those ornaments would have gone undocumented.
Now you know why we do a 3 step process.

Why this blog?
I decided to write this blog to better address some of the questions I am receiving at AAbleHomeServices.com , since I am local to the St. Louis area, I am unable to provide a solution to many potential clients around the nation.
So, even though I may give away 'trade secrets' about how we perform and maintain a home inventory for AAble Home Services clients, I want to help you protect yourself and your possessions in the case of a loss.
I hope that this information proves to be valuable to you and, if you need clarification or have questions, feel free to contact me.

Why I do it
Granted, this blog is new and my company is less than 6 months old, so what gives me the knowledge and know-how to tell you about home inventories, whether in St. Louis or anywhere else in the nation?
It took a great amount of research and time to decide to do home inventories. I needed something that had value, provided personal customer service, and made enough money to justify the venture. I had researched many opportunities, even thought of opening a bed and breakfast since my wife's education and experience is in hotel management. I gave thought to restaurants and home improvement, but they just didn't hold my interest. Then, our country experienced Katrina and Rita and we have wild-fires and home fires and burglaries and a pattern emerged.
I started getting interested in how people were coping with these losses, what were the reactions of the insurance companies, what claims did they pay, what claims were easiest to process? Finally, it all came together, I decided to use an idea of a friend and pursue it. I developed a custom database, bought a high-quality video camera and a digital camera and started AAble Home Services. And here I am writing posts.
When you witness these tragedies, you want to help and we do help our clients that experience them. But, we have found a way to be of a greater help BEFORE the disaster so that your AFTER experience can be less stressful, more beneficial, and easier on both you and your insurance agent. The information provided in a professional home inventory can be a valuable resource and our verfication can make the difference between a replacement TV and the replacement of your feature rich television that sat in your family room in your entertainment center.

Why a Home Inventory?
A home inventory is just a tool to help you in case of a property loss due to fire, flood, burglary, or any claimable loss for your insurance company. Like any tool, it has a specific purpose, but can sometimes be used for other tasks.
The primary purpose is to identify and justify items listed in an insurance claim. Did you really have a 62" HD DLP TV? An inventory, with video, photo and written proof can tell your adjuster that you did have one and that it was a particular brand with when it was purchased and where.
Secondary purposes, financial planners may use it to determine your expected retirement lifestyle, loan officers may use it for a collateral list, or you may use it to see how long you've had particular items or to track major purchases.
AAble Home Services have helped our clients maintain their inventories, acted as 3rd party independent verification of inventories and, on client request, provide their information to financial planners, bankers, and other insurance agencies for quotes.
